The Bohemian Forest is a biologically extraordinary region in Middle Europe, which merits large attention concerning the exploration and documentation of its biodiversity and nature conservation. Vascular plants are important components of this ecosystem; they have great influence on higher trophic levels because they are primary producers and providers of diverse habitats. 

The Flora Silvae Gabretae (or Flora of the Bohemian Forest) is a collective natural heritage of the Czechs and Germans and formed by migration and extinction events of natural as well as human origin. Important factors for the various patterns of flora in the region were the diverse types of land-use in different areas of the project and their change over the time. The conservation of the natural heritage is not possible without its profound knowledge.

The research on the flora of the Bohemian Forest has a long traditon on both sides of the border. A comprehensive survey, however, was challenging as the methodical approaches and the intensity of research in the single subregions varied and the cooperation between the experts was - because of language and political reasons - limited. The proposed project will expand and bring together the available data on occurrence and ecological requirements of vascular plants in the Bohemian Forest  - independently from country borders. A critical analysis of these data, consequently, results in an online presentation of the present and historical distribution as well as of the occurrence frequency of plant species. At both sides of the border, this information is of great importance for the conceptual planning and priorization of measures with regard to species and ecosystem conservation. That includes the monitoring of  population development of rare and endangered species..

The easy access to knowledge about flora and its change will enlarge the interest on future plant life research in the Bohemian Forest and create an encreased public acceptance for preservation of plant diversity.  

=== Funding ===

Since 1990 the European Union is supporting territorial cooperations between regions and cities through the program „Interreg“ of the European Regional Development Fund ([https://ec.europa.eu/regional_policy/en/funding/erdf/ ERDF]). The ERDF focus its investments on projects on infrastructure, the cooperation between public utilities, collaborative actions of companies or activities in the field of environment protection, education, land-use planning and culture. The fifth funding period of the progrm, i.e., [https://ec.europa.eu/regional_policy/de/policy/cooperation/european-territorial/ ETC “European Territorial Cooperation” INTERREG V], is regularily set up from 2014 to 2020.

The project „Flora des Böhmerwaldes“ is an action to establish a cross-border cooperation between the Free State of Bavaria and the Czech Republic ([https://www.by-cz.eu/aktuelles/ Ziel ETZ], INTERREG A; EU-project number 216). The applicable project period is from 2019-01-01 up to 2022-06-30. On the part of Bavaria the action is managed by the government of Niederbayern. The focus is set on nature conservation, protection of the environment and the planning of resource efficiency.

The financial support called “Ziel ETZ” is approx. 1 million € (in total). There is a co-financing of 15% (from the partner country/ region, public support).

=== Cooperation with the Flora of Bavaria initiative ===

The two Bavarian partners have a strong cooperation with the projects [[Koordinationsstelle für Florenschutz in Bayern]] and [[Aktualisierung der Roten Liste der Gefäßpflanzen Bayerns]]. Data which are generated and mobilised as part of the project “Flora Silvae Gabretae” are processed for the Pladias portal of the Bohemian Forest. In parallel, the data are integrated in the DWB data network of the Flora of Bavaria and published via the assigned portals under a CC license (--> info under [[Flora_of_Bavaria_%E2%94%80_occurrence_data_online|Flora of Bavaria ─ occurrence data online]] and [[Floristic_records_from_survey_studies_of_the_Bayerisches_Landesamt_f%C3%BCr_Umwelt|Floristic records from survey studies of the Bayerisches Landesamt für Umwelt]]). The study area in Bavaria comprizes 50 TK25 quadrants. With status of November 2018, there are about 310.000 occurrence data in the DWB network, most of them GRID-raster based. The observations refer to more than 2.146 taxonomic names, i.e., to 1.353 taxa.
